"Doc" Birney was the son of John Birney and Catherine Myers. He married twice. He married as his second wife, Margaret Priscilla Bush who bore him two sons, William Perry Bush and Everett Letchworth Birney. He lived a very full and adventurous life. He practiced medicine for 45 years in Ralls County. He was a veteran of the thickest of the fighting in the Civil War. He was a lead scout, serving in Co. "E". 17th Indiana Infantry, U.S.A.
