Samuel served in both Co A of 5th WV Infantry and Co A 1 WV Vet Infantry during the Civil War. He was present at 2nd Manassa. After the war he met Edith Smtih in Parkersburg WV and married her on 2 Sept 1865 adopting her son John who was fathered by a Confederate soldier with the last name of Thompson. The couple eventually settled in Lewis County, WV. Their children were William, Charles, Sarah, David, and Eldridge.

Copies of his muster and muster out records were supplied by The State Archives in Charleston WV. There is also a Civil War Veteran Pension record showing his widow was Edith Cavins from West Virginia. Children's ages do not match with the 1870 census. The National Archives have also supplied readable copies of his enlistment papers as well as Muster Rolls.
