George married Nancy McClure, daughter of William and Sarah Elizabeth Mason McClure, on 12 November 1868.
They were the parents of James Madison, Sarah Elizabeth, Stella Jane, George, William Alves and John H. Hampton.
Nancy's date of death and place of burial is currently not known.
OLD SOLDIER HONORED IN RITES SUNDAY
George Washington Hampton Given Military Burial
One of Sullivan county's few remaining Civil War veterans was laid to rest here Sunday afternoon when military services were held for George Washington Hampton. Mr. Hampton was 91 years old and had lived near Sullivan since the close of the war.
The rites were conducted at the Billman Chapel Sunday afternoon with Rev. F.P. Bedwell, pastor of the Methodist church officiating. The services were largely attended.
Members of the American legion served as pall bearers for the old soldier. Floral pieces were carried by Mary E Baders, Betty Hampton, Becky Adams, Andy Lewellyn, Billy H. Hampton, Sonny Burns and Polly Ann Hampton.
Sacred hymns were song by a male quartet,
At the grave at Center Ridge a salute was fired and taps sounded by the Legion.
Sullivan Post no. 139, American Legion, today expressed appreciation to the members of the Shelburn, Carlisle Legion posts, and the veterans from Hymera, who assisted in the military observance of the death of Mr. Hampton. Mr. Hampton several years ago requested that the Sullivan Legion post conduct his funeral and he renewed this request shortly before he died.

GEORGE W. HAMPTON, CIVIL WAR VETERAN, ONE OF OLDEST RESIDENTS, DIES TODAY
Taps sounded for George Washington Hampton, a veteran of the Civil War, early this morning when he passed away at the home of a grandson, Robert L. Hampton of near this city.
Born in Knoxville, Tennessee, Mr. Hampton came to Sullivan county at the end of the Civil War. He had lived near this city for the past sixty years. Mr. Hampton was one of the oldest residents of this county, having reached the age of 91 years.
Mrs. Hampton preceded her husband in death about 55 years ago. Mr. Hampton's children, with the exception of Mrs. Stella Mason of this city have also preceded him in death.
Besides Mrs. Mason and the grandson, a number of other grandchildren survive.
The body was removed from the Billman Funeral Home to the home of the grandson this afternoon and will be returned to the chapel of the funeral home Sunday afternoon for two o'clock funeral services. Rev. F.P. Bedwell, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church, will officiate at the services.
Interment will be made in Center Ridge cemetery.
