BURGAW -- Sarah Amelia Brodmerkel, age 17 of Burgaw, died Wednesday March 31, 2010 at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. She was born September 16, 1992 in New Hanover County, daughter of James Scott and Jan Phillips Brodmerkel.
Sarah was a lifelong member of the Burgaw Presbyterian Church where she played in the Hand Bell Choir. She served on the youth council of the Presbytery of Coastal Carolina. She loved being a member of the Heide Trask Band where she played tenor sax. Sarah was a senior at the North Carolina School of Science and Math where she was a student ambassador. She loved to travel having recently taken a ten day trip to France.
Sarah was a shining star for and from Pender County. She was the finest example of what a small, rural community can offer. We are all so proud of her many, many accomplishments and opportunities provided by the many caregivers and educators in her home here in Rocky Point and Burgaw. Sarah had a smile that lit up a room and she truly cared about those around her as much as they cared about her. She will be missed dearly by all who knew her.
She is survived by her parents, and her sister Anna Elizabeth Brodmerkel all of the home; grandparents, Amy Jo Phillips of Burgaw, James A. Brodmerkel and wife Brenda of York, SC; Barbara J. Brodmerkel and Jeff Bruce of Belgrade, MT; uncles John C. Phillips, Jr. and wife Katie of Columbia, SC, Jeff Brodmerkel of Fort Mill, SC; an aunt, Janet Buchanan and husband Brian of Stanley, NC; two cousins, Nathan Buchanan and Carter Buchanan.
Funeral services will be Monday April 5, 2010 at 11:00 AM at the Burgaw Presbyterian Church. The Reverend Doctor Ray Mendenhall will officiate, and burial will follow in Riverview Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Sunday 6-7:30 pm at Harrell's Funeral Home.
