Roman Catholic Cardinal. Born in Beveren-Lie, Belgium, he was ordained a priest in 1952. He studied canon law at the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium and at the Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. He served as a rector of the Immaculate Heart mission seminary in Washington D.C. and professor at various religious institutes in Belgium. He came to Rome, Italy in 1967 to serve as head of his order at the Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. He was secretary-general of the Vatican based Synod of Bishops from 1985 to 2004. He coordinated more than 10 major synods. He was Secretariat of State under 3 Popes since 1972. He served on several Vatican commissions and counsils and was secretary of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace from 1980 to 1983. Pope John Paul II presided over his funeral mass at the Vatican. (bio by: Genet)
