At the age of 20 and on 13 July 1851, he married 19 year old Rachel Hall in LaSalle, Monroe County, Michigan (per marriage record/affidavit).
The proud couple had three children: Lois A on 5 December 1851; Horace Leslie on 29 September 1855 and Mariette May (Etta) on 30 January 1861.
With the nation divided and at war, Robert brought his mastery of rifle shooting forward, was commissioned into Berdain's 1st U.S. Sharpshooters Regiment by Lieutenant John M. Daley on 1 January 1862 for a three year term. Private Robert Case was assigned to Captain A. Milan Willett's Company I in April 1862 and ordered to Camp Winfield Scott near Yorktown, Virginia (per his service and pension records).
Robert was reported "sick in Washington" during September and October 1862 (per Company memorandum). He returned to duty through the end of the year only to become ill again. On 1 February 1863 he was admitted to General Hospital no. 9 in Nashville, Tennessee. Private Case received a Certificate of Disability for Discharge from Willett's Company I of Berdain's 1st U.S. Sharpshooters due to "Chronic Rheumatism."
Robert died in General Hospital no. 9 on 24 February 1863. Dr. Edward G White signed his death record and he was laid to rest at Nashville National Cemetery in nearby Madison, Tennessee. He was survived by his wife and three children.
Robert's widow, Rachel Case married Uriah DuBois in 1865. Uriah died in April 1886. In the spring of 1901, new funds were authorized by US Congress for pensions to widows of Civil War soldiers. Rachel was granted this pension in August 1901 which continued until her death in August 1908.
