Anchorage resident Hilja Ilona Bolyan , 79, died June 5 at home. A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at Evergreen Memorial Chapel, downtown.
Mrs. Bolyan was born Sept. 28, 1914, in Douglas, to Henry and Ida Reinikka. She graduated with honors from Douglas High School in 1932. In 1936, she graduated from the University of Alaska Fairbanks with honors and a degree in business administration. She then worked at the Rockefeller Foundation for two years, researching and compiling the early Russian history of Alaska in Washington, D.C. Most of this work was done in the Library of Congress. The results can be found in several libraries, including UAF. She married Clyde Bolyan on Sept. 4, 1938, in Juneau. They lived in Cobal, a small mining camp on the west coast of Chichagoff Island near Douglas, in the late 1930s. They then lived in Douglas until 1941 when they moved to California. Mrs. Bolyan worked as a bookkeeper at North American Aviation in Englewood, Calif. She returned to Anchorage in November 1945. She also worked at Fort Richardson, the Civil Aeronautics Administration, now the Federal Aviation Administration, Elmendorf Air Force Base and various local businesses. Mrs. Bolyan was a life member of the Pioneers Auxiliary of Alaska. She was a member of Alaska Yukon Pioneers and the Soumi Finnland Club of Anchorage, and a 50-year member of the Eastern Star in California. Besides loving and caring for her family she enjoyed counseling and giving advice to her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed making outstanding needlework items, her family said. After retiring, she and her husband enjoyed cruises to more than 100 countries. Mrs.
Bolyan is survived by her husband, Clyde of Anchorage; son, Arthur of Anchorage; daughters, Christine Gnome and Johanna West of Palmer; brother Arthur Reinikka of Anchorage; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
