Catherine M. Reddy LEWIS was the daughter of Irish parents: Rose LARKIN and John REDDY (John may have died in Ireland). She was born in northern Ireland and her mother tongue was Gaelic.
In 1882 at age 7 she immigrated from Ireland to Michigan. There she and her mother Rose lived with Rose's sister Mary LARKIN PATTON and her husband James PATTON in Calhoun Co., near Albion. It is not known if her father John REDDY died in Ireland or after arriving in the U.S. There are no burial records for him in Calhoun Co., MI.
Catherine, known as Kitty, was raised in the home of the PATTONS while growing up and sometimes used their last name to honor them. She also passed it along to her only son, James Patton LEWIS.
In 1893 at age 17/18 she married a 28 year old neighbor, Homer Austin LEWIS. Like Kitty, Homer had also lost a parent at a young age and was raised in the home of relatives. Around 1915 they moved west to Oregon where Homer worked for many years at the stockyards in Portland. They made their home in the Kenton district of NE Portland at 2036 Farragut St. They also owned and spent as much time as possible at a beach cabin in what is now Lincoln City, OR. There they entertained children, grandchildren, and other family and friends until after Catherine's death in 1940.
Their known children:
1) Mary Marna LEWIS WHITE b.
2) James Patton LEWIS b. 1900 d. 1957.
