Enlisted as a private in Co. D, 102nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, on 27 January 1864 at the age of 21. Pvt. Baker was part of a relief expedition that was sent on 24 September 1864 to relieve and reinforce Ft. Henderson at Athens, AL, which was under siege by rebel cavalry under the command of CSA Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest. While the relief detachment was fighting to attain the fort, the fort commander surrendered. Forrest's troops then forced the relief expedition to surrender as well. Baker was sent to Cahaba Prison. Exchanged on 22 April 1865. Mustered out at Columbus, OH, on 3 June 1865.
