April Buenrostro, 14, had just stopped in at a party when she was fatally shot.
Cathy Buenrostro, April's mother, fought back tears Monday as she described the loss of her youngest daughter.
"It's like it's unreal...it just seems so unfair. They just were in the wrong place at the wrong time," Cathy Buenrostro said Monday. "April was a treasure...she would go out of her way to help anybody."
Students at Centennial High School, where April was a freshman, observed a moment of silence, and school officials made grief counselors available.
April was a gifted artist who drew portraits for her family members and liked to write poetry, older sister Maria Rodriguez said. April spent a lot of time helping around the house — her father is in a wheelchair as a result of a bad traffic accident 14 years ago — but she also found time to make friends, Cathy Buenrostro said.
She is survived by her loving parents, Ernesto Sr. and Catherine Buenrostro, brothers and sisters, Maria, Ernesto Jr., Patricia, Judy and Mundo. April is also loved by and survived by her great-grandmother, grandparents, aunts, uncles, many nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends. A visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Recitation Of The Rosary will be held at 6 p.m., Wednesday, April 19, 2006 at Bowman Funeral Parlor, Garden City. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Omaha, Neb. on Saturday, April 22, 2006.
My sincerest thanks to Medora for her kindness in sponsoring April's memorial page.
