Helped his father, William Henry Herndon and Jesse Weik write the biography of Abraham Lincoln, "Herndon's Lincoln." Otherwise, he enjoyed life as a farmer in Fancy Creek. He spent his last years of life at the Soldier's Home in Danville, Illinois where he passed.

On his paternal side his great grandfather, Edward Day, served in the Revolutionary War. On his maternal side, his great grandfather, Joel Maxcy served in the Revolutionary War as well.
