Son of William Melvin and Mary Jane (Hillis) Beebe. Brother of Edwin H, David Duncan (Senator D.D.), Mary Ann, and John Hillis Beebe.
The Majors military record was excellent and brilliant. He entered as a Lieutenant in the 41st Ohio, General Hazens's regiment. After the war he was made a Captain in the regular army and resigned under the reorganization act of 1820. He entered the general service and was selected by General Hazen to command the first expedition to the Artic regions - the Greeley Expedition to the Polar Regions. William M. Beebe, a clerk in the Signal Service, and who had charge of the first Greeley relief expedition, committed suicide last night by taking laudanum.
