Steve Brown, 44, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2008, at his home in Dodge City.
He was born in Cortland, NY on May 8, 1963, the son of Robert A. and Betty L. (Blankenship) Brown. He married Roberta "Bobbi" Hann on April 16, 2005, after they had been together since 2001.
He graduated from Groton Central School, Groton, NY, in 1981, where he was a star basketball player and earned a full scholarship to Fort Hays State University. At Fort Hays, he earned a bachelor's degree in mass communications, and broadcasted "Play by Play: FHSU" games for KJLS radio in Hays.
He worked as a radio DJ and sports announcer for Rocking M Radio, as well as referee, umpire, and karaoke DJ with Steve's Sound Machine. He was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed life to the fullest and reporting it to all his listeners.
His hobbies included traveling, fishing, karaoke, following the Kansas City Chiefs, the Dodge City Red Demons, Dodge City Legends, watching Monday Night football with friends, and spending quality time with family and friends.
He was a member of Relay for Life, Dodge City High School Booster Clubs, and Steve's Sound Machine, all of Dodge City, and the NFHS Officials Association.
Survivors include his wife, Roberta "Bobbi" Brown, of the home; his parents, Robert and Betty Brown, Groton, NY; two brothers, Tom Brown and wife, Sally, Groton, NY, and David Brown and wife, Joan, Hays; two sisters, Margie Williams and husband, Steve, Groton, NY, and Barbara Pelham and husband, Steve, Hickory, NC; two stepsons, Jason Buddy and wife, Melissa, and Chris Buddy and wife, Jennifer, Dodge City; one stepdaughter, Lisa Buddy, Honolulu, Hawaii; two grandchildren; and 34 nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Katherine, and one brother, James.
The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Christian Church, with Mr. Jeff Hiers presiding. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Dodge City.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Monday at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City. Memorials can be made to Steve Brown Benefit Fund in care of the Swaim Funeral Home, 1901 Sixth Ave., Dodge City, KS 67801.
