Dorothy Millette was the common-law wife of Paul Bern. Dorothy became ill and was cared for in a sanitorium. In 1932, Paul Bern married Jean Harlow in a much publicized wedding. On September 5, 1932, two months after the wedding, Bern was found dead in his Hollywood home. Dorothy was a passenger on the Delta King river boat but disappeared the night of September 6. Her body was soon found in Georgiana Slough (near Walnut Grove).
Mendel Silberberg, the attorney for Metro Goldwyn Mayer (MGM) gave the coroner instructions to bury Millette and send him the bill. Apparently, there was no funeral at that time, and her grave was unmarked (no headstone) for nearly a year before Herman Koch and Chester Gannon were able to raise funds to give Dorothy a proper headstone and funeral.
