*16 Americans Die In B-29 Landing Landing Crash In Azores
PONTA DELGADA, Azores Islands, May 18 (UP) An American B-29 Superfortress crashed and exploded today as it attempted to land at the U. S Airforce base at Lagens, killing all 16 men aboard. The U S. Air Force in London announced that only 15 men were killed. It said there were no survivors. (A public relations officer at Barksdale field, Louisiana, from where the plane had taken off, said it carried 16 men 11 crew members and five passengers). The plane, one of about 30 from the 301st Bomber Group en route to Eneland. crashed in a light rain after one of its four engines failed. As it neared the runway, the pilot apparently decided to make another try and pulled the craft into a climb. It went into a stall, then crashed into a pile of scrap lron, caught fire and exploded. All the men aboard were burned beyond recognition. The B-29 had been diverted to the Azores from Bermuda, its last stopping place, because of . the bad engine. The others went directly to England. No Nebraskans were among the crew, which Included Sgt. Chester Ballew, 26, Cherryville, Kan. ( The Beatrice Times - Beatrice, Nebraska - 19 May 1950, Fri • Page 1)
