William entered the United
States at New York on May 6,
1846. From there his family
went to Ohio, settling near
New Lisbon. The 1860 Census
shows him a student at age 20.
On June 1, 1861 he reported to
Pittsburgh, PA, but the men there
were sent to Wheeling, VA. On
June 20, 1861 he was mustered
in the 2nd Regiment Virginia Inf
antry(Union), Company F. He soon
fought against Robert E. Lee in
1861 at Cheat Mountain. Then
came a series of Battles in the
Valley against Stonewall Jackson.
William was captured at 2nd
Bull Run, but was paroled & re
leased about September 1, 1862,
the same day he was promoted to
Sgt. The 2nd Regiment then
became part of the 4th Seperate
Brigade. On August 26 &
27 they fought the Battle of
Rocky Gap, VA(White Sulfur Sprgs).
William was captured carrying the
Orderly Sgt off the field. He
spent about 6 months at Belle
Island Prison in Richmond and
then was sent to Andersonville,GA.
From they he ended up in the '
Florence, SC Stockcade. From
there he was sent to Wilmington,
NC and was paroled at NE Ferry
near Wilmington, February 26-28,
1865. He entered the Hospital at
Camp Jackson where he died on
April 10, 1865. He was
buried at Oakdale in the Public
Ground along with other prisoners
who were paroled at Wilmington.
