The remarkable story of H. E. Agar

Henry Ellsworth Agar, who represented Gibson County Ind. in the house during the sixty-fourth session, lived in Princeton, Ind. where he was born September 15, 1861. His father Henry Agar was born in County Carlow, Ireland, June 10, 1815, his mother Eliza Conner was born in County West Meath, Ireland December 20, 1828. Henry E's parents were among the early settlers Of Gibson County Ind, coming in 1851, and doing much to build the town of Princeton. Elder Henry was a builder and contractor.

Henry E. Agar graduated in 1877 from Princeton High School and after teaching school for two years entered the mercantile business. He had grain elevators along the Southern and E & T H railroads and barges on the Walbash River. He was of the Presbyterian faith.

Special to The Herald:
Princeton, Ind., Dec. 17, 1908
Much interest was created here today by the news that Henry E. Agar, alias R. A. Connor, had been arrested at Harlingen, Texas, by Ranger Captain Tom Ross. Agar disappeared from this place two years ago and was
supposed to have been drowned in the Wabash river, either by accident or by suicidal act.

Henry E. Agar was quite a promnent man here, being connected with a well known bank, besides being engaged in the grain business. He was charged with being a defaulter, his affairs having gotten into bad condition through over speculation on his part. It is charged that he used the money of the bank for buying futures and that when the market failed, he was short in his accounts. When he disappeared, it was supposed that he had either committed suicide by throwing himself into the river, or that he was drowned accidentally. The insurance companies particularly want him, and are offering large rewards for him, as they have paid to his family insurance amounting to $20,000.

News of Agar's confession that he is the man wanted, and of the story of his life since leaving Princeton, was received with the greatest interest here. Officers are now on their
way to Texas.

Agar Released
Princeton, Ind.,
Dec. 30, 1908 Henry E. Agar, the former member of the Legislature who was arrested in Texas and brought home undercharges of forgery and embezzlement, left Monday night for Texas and it is understood that he has made terms with the persons he is alleged to have defrauded and will not be prosecuted. His family will follow as soon as their affairs can be arranged.

Mrs. Agar paid back to the insurance companies all sums paid to her and suits against the others will be dismissed. One the heaviest losers by Agar's embezzlements said that Agar got a big surprise Christmas gift when arrested and his friends have given him a New Year's gift in return.

Wealthy men in Texas with whom Agar was identified in business during his two years absence are understood to have advanced him large sums to enable him to square himself with creditors here.
