Explorer, Writer. Born in Stockholm, Sweden, his first adventure was as an interpreter with the Swedish-Norwegian embassy to the Shah of Persia on the 3,600 mile journey through Asia in 1890. Between the years 1893 to 1935, he made four expeditions to Central Asia, charting maps of significant areas in Pamir, Taklamakan, Tibet and Transhimalaya, also called the Hedin Mountains. With German, Danish, Chinese and Swedish scientists he traveled in the Gobi Desert and Turkestan, and wrote of his China expeditions. His thirty-five volumes of books included "The Flight of Big Horse" (1936), "The Silk Road" (1936) and "The Wandering Lake" (1940). During World War II, he continued geographic and cartographic research and spoke for strong military defense and a political orientation towards Germany. He also the last person to receive a Swedish knighthood in 1902.
