Born in Belleville, Alfred was the fourth of eight children born to John Shibley Huffman and his wife Lavina Fralick. As a young man he studied medicine at Victoria College in Cobourg, Ontario. Instead of practicing medicine he went into business, following relatives to Rockford, Illinois in 1852 where he opened a business with a friend called Huffman and Bush which dealt in dry goods. He married Maria Augusta Stewart in 1854. Alfred continued in business for many years and became a leading citizen of Rockford. He worked for a time in Iowa, but ultimately returned to Illinois. He and his wife had six children Mary Lavina, John Stewart, Charles Willard, Willian Ferdinand, Alfred MacGregor, and Elizabeth Augusta.
