Raymond Theodore "Ray" Abernethy b. 10/27/1906 d. 11/5/2005
Raymond Theodore "Ray" Abernethy, 99, of Lincoln died there Saturday, Nov. 5.
He was born Oct. 27, 1906, in Ord, Neb., to Jason and Mabel (Anderson) Abernethy.
On May 8, 1934, he married Jennie Lind in Lincoln. They celebrated 70 years of marriage in 2004. Mrs. Abernethy died Jan. 30, 2005.
Mr. Abernethy retired from the Army at the rank of lieutenant colonel. In 2005, he received the Minute Man Award for 50 years in the Reserve Officers Association. He was a Member Post No. 3 of the American Legion and was an admiral in the Nebraska Navy.
A registered professional engineer in Nebraska and Oklahoma, Mr. Abernethy retired from Western Electric and was a member of several professional organizations. Before working for AT&T, he was a foreman and lieutenant in the Civilian Conservation Corps and a project engineer for the Rural Electric Association.
Mr. Abernethy was a five-gallon Red Cross blood donor and a member of many social organizations. He was a member of North Star Masonic Lodge No. 227, Capstone No. 64, Mt. Moriah Command No. 4 and Hiram Club. An ardent tennis player, he was a member of Lincoln Tennis Association and American Tennis Association. An insatiable stamp collector, he belonged to the Lincoln Stamp Club and the American Philatelic Society.
Survivors are a son, R. Bruce Abernethy of Lincoln; two daughters and their husbands, Laurie and Bob Guthmann of Greeley and Janice and Rodger Pereyra of Cottage Grove, Minn.; six grandchildren and their spouses, Scott Guthmann of Denver, Todd and Susan Guthmann of Greeley, Lisa Youngwirth of Ault, Kristi Pereyra and Christopher Viaggi of Mountain View, Calif., Amy and Pat Magras of Burnsville, Minn., and Alicia Pereyra of Pacific Grove, Calif.; and seven great-grandchildren.
Besides his wife, two sisters, Evelyn Howard and Wilma Faria, preceded him in death.
Memorial services were Nov. 14 at Christ United Methodist Church in Lincoln. Preceding the memorial service, interment with full military honors was at Wyuka Cemetery, Lincoln.
