her husband Ezra went back to Maine after she died and was buried there
Charlotte was the sixth of eight children born to Ephraim and Esther (Tibbetts) Leighton. She grew up in Rome and Augusta, Kennebec County in central Maine. Her siblings: Stephen, Henry Tibbetts, Ephraim Jr., Susanna K., Esther, Anna B. and Isaac.
On August 5, 1825, a marriage intention was filed in Augusta between Charlotte Leighton and Ezra Bradford, Jr. The 1830 census records two people, one man, one woman between 20 and 29 years living in Parkman, Maine.
They had one child: Julianna Elizabeth whose birth is recorded as December 9, 1821 in Parkman, Maine. [This date may be incorrect since Ezra and Charlotte were not married till 1825.]
A family story says that Ezra and Charlotte decided to move to Iowa with Charlotte's brother, Isaac and his wife Permelia. Family friends Isaac and Henrietta Carr accompanied them. In about 1840 this group moved to Cattaraugus County, New York for a time where Henry Tibbetts Leighton, Isaac and Charlotte's older brother lived. They probably lived in the area about 4 or 5 years.
The 1850 census finds Charlotte and Ezra living in Division 20 Township, Washington County, Iowa. In 1856 they are found in Lime Creek Township where they lived till 1881 when Charlotte died. After her parents [Isaac and Henrietta] died in the early 1850s, Amanda Carr lived with the Bradfords until she married Ezra Jr's nephew [also named Ezra, son of his brother Luther] in 1865.
