Wakaninajiwin in Santee Sioux can mean Sacred woman Standing or Sacred standing. Her record at Ft. Snelling just reads Mary Eastman. She was born in the Santee Sioux village of Black Dog about 1815. Her Father was called Mahp ija Wiscaste or Cloud Man Her mother was Canpaduta win or Red Cherry Woman. At the age of 15 (1830) she marries Lt. (later General) Seth Eastman according to Dakota (Santee Sioux) rites. They make their home at St. Antony Falls ( the Little Falls or Mini Haha). There their infant daughter, Winina (Nancy) is born in March or April of 1831. She is 10 months old When Seth is reassigned to West Point. Mary was expecting another child - Lucy, who died shortly after her birth. When Seth left he appointed Capt. Taliaferro his family's gardian. This was not unusual because Taliaferro was not only post commander but Eastman's brother-in-law as well. years later he would marry Elizabeth Dillion and returned th Ft. Snelling for a while.
Ten years later Eastman returned as a Captian and post commander at Snelling. He brought his new wife Mary Henderson Eastman. He was greeted by his Sioux friends and his first family. This is evident from Mary's contact with the first wife and the drawings of Nancy as a young girl. But later Mary (the first wife) tried to sell Nancy to Rev. Samuel Pound and Nancy married Many Lightenings.Mary died somewhere in Redwood county Minnisota. Possibbly alone because both Nancy and her husband saw her and her mother as meddling and mean. Many Sioux woman die in the winter because no Husband, son or son-in-law will take care of them.
