Marc Lepine

Death: Dec. 6, 1989

Mass Murderer. On December 6, 1989, 25 year old Marc Lepine, armed with a Sturm Ruger Mini-14 Semi-automatic rifle, knives and bandoliers of ammunition, entered the Engineering Department of the Montreal Ecole Polytechnique Institute (University of Montreal), in Montreal, Quebec, and gunned down 14 innocent women, wounding 13 others, before turning the gun on himself. The women were later identified as, Genevieve Bergeron, 21, Helene Colgan, 23, Nathalie Croteau, 23, Barbara Daigneault, 22, Anne-Marie Edward, 21, Maud Haviernick, 29, Barbara Maria Klucsnik, 31, Maryse Laganier, 25, Maryse Leclair, 23, Anne-Marie Lemay, 27, Sonia Pelletier, 28, Michele, Richard, 21, Annie St-Arneault, 23, and Annie Turcotte, 21. After the 'Montreal Massacre' a note written by Lepine was found and according to the letter he blamed women feminists for ruining his life after he was denied admittance to the school. The day of December 6, was proclaimed a National Day of Rememberance and Action on Violence Against Women by the Canadian Government. The women are remembered every year with tributes across Canada. (bio by: K)
