George Lyon Obituary (Thanks to Mary Sicard)

Funeral services for George A. Lyon, one of Estherville’s most prominent business men, who died last Wednesday [April 11, 1928] in a local hospital of nephritis, were held Friday afternoon at the Lyon home on north 7th street with the Rev. P. A. Davies officiating. The body was taken to Willoughby Lake, Vermont, for burial in the family lot.

George Augustus Lyon was born Sept. 25, 1858, at West Derby, Vermont, where he received his education at an academy. When 12 years old his mother died and at the age of 16 came to Highland, Iowa. Later he moved to Rock Rapids where he operated a lumber yard. After a year at Sioux City he went to Forest City where he and Mr. Spalding started a chain of lumber yards known as the Northern Lumber Company.

He was married in 1884 to Miss Fannie Homes, who died in 1899, and on May 11, 1901, he was married to Mrs. Cora S. Cameron. To this marriage one child, Virginia, was born.

In 1903 Mr. and Mrs. Lyons came to Estherville, and this has been their home ever since. When he died Mr. Lyon was secretary and treasurer and general manager of the Northern Lumber Company and was secretary and treasurer of the Lehigh Sewer Pipe and Tile Company of Fort Dodge. He was a Mason, a Knight Templar, a member of the Shrine and the Eastern Star, belonged to the B.P.O. Elks, was an active Vestryman of the Episcopal Church for many years, and was a member of the Chamber of Commerce.

He is survived by his wife and daughter Virginia, a sister, Mrs. Etta More of Newport, Va., and a brother, Porter Lyon, of Newport, Va. (The Estherville News, Estherville, IA, April 18, 1928)
