James Andrew Martin was born in Smith County, Mississippi to James Andrew Martin Sr. (1808-1851) and Fanny Elizabeth Martin. (Ashley was Fannys maiden name) James paternal grandfather was Reverend John Pigg Martin b. 23, April, 1777 in Henry County, Virginia.

James was a private in the 37th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry , Company G known as the "Yancey Guards" He was captured at Vicksburg, Mississippi on July 4, 1863 . James and others signed a "Cease and Desist " order not to fight again.

His first marriage was to Nancy Jane Davis. This was his children's mother.
He married Nancy Stracner (his last wife) in 1876 in Howard County,

He is my paternal gg grandfather.
