Fry, Vicki Voyles
July 14, 1943 - April 17, 2011
Vicki Voyles Fry, 67, of Sarasota died April 17, 2011.
Vicki was born in Muncie, Ind. on July 14th, 1943. Vicki moved to Sarasota in 1955 with her parents, Grover and Martha Voyles and her brother, Jeff. She graduated from Sarasota High School in 1961. She went on to Florida State University where she earned her bachelor's degree in Special Education and was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority and met her soul mate, Buck Fry. They married on April 25, 1965.
Vicki became the first special education teacher in Columbus, Miss. in 1965. She later taught special education at Ramey Air Force Base in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico from 1968 until 1970, where she also earned her Master's Degree in Educational Administration.
She moved to Baltimore in 1972, where she discovered her love for art and decorating. She developed window and store displays for a local Stretch-and-Sew fabric company where her talents soon provided her with an opportunity to become a Buyer and Marketing Specialist.
In 1977, Buck and Vicki moved to Sarasota where they bought a store on St. Armand's Circle which they named "A Little Something". That business evolved into "A Little Something for Bed, Bath and Table" which eventually became "The Square on the Circle". Vicki was instrumental in founding the St Armand's Circle Business Improvement District, where she served as one of its Directors. This was the first B.I.D., not only in Sarasota, but in the state of Florida. Vicki was a member of the St. Armand's Residents Association Board of Directors and helped start the St. Armand's Landowner's Merchants' and Residents' Association.
She was recently recognized by the City Commission of Sarasota with a Proclamation for her community involvement. The Proclamation declared April 4th, 2011 as "Vicki Fry Day".
In addition to her active involvement on St. Armand's, Vicki was also a devoted member of First Presbyterian Church of Sarasota for over 3 decades where she was an Elder, the Chairman of the Preschool Board for the last 11 years, served on the Committee to develop a contemporary worship service, and a youth leader for over 20 years.
As a committed member of the Bird Key Yacht Club, Vicki served as both Social Chairman and Chairman of House and Grounds. As an avid planner, Vicki worked on the S.H.S. 50th Reunion Committee to plan the upcoming reunion at the Yacht Club this May.
She showed us all that life is not about weathering the storms, but learning to dance in the rain! Her way of "dancing" was to be with family, whether gathered around the table for Mexican Dominoes or traveling with her husband. Vicki believed in creating memories for her family with vacations to exciting destinations. Trips that her five grandchildren will hold in their hearts for the rest of their lives.
Vicki is survived by her loving husband of 46 years, Buck Fry; daughters, Elaine and Kimberly; five wonderful grandchildren, Nathan, Josh, Isabella, Vincent, and Hope and her brother Jeff Voyles.
There will be a celebration of her life on Wednesday, April 27th at 10:30a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 2050 Oak Street. At Vicki's request, colorful attire is required, no black allowed.
