Mr. Dobrowolski was born in Wolborz, Poland and died in Debno, Poland.
He was a teacher who was caught up in the afflictions of World War II. Because he defied the Nazis and continued teaching children, he was arrested by the Gestapo in June of 1942 and sent to Auschwitz. Later he was moved to the concentration camps of Gross-Rosen and Sachsenhausen.
"Auschwitz was worse than Dante's hell," he recalled in a video made when he was 103. Mr. Dobrowolski was the oldest Auschwitz survivor when he died at the age of 108.
After the war, he moved to Debno, where he worked as a Polish-language teacher and as principal at an elementary school and later at a high school for many years.
He will be buried in Debno on Wednesday October 24, 2012.
