Vernette Nelson, beloved child's librarian, died Thursday, April 12, 2001, at Meritcare Hospital, Fargo, ND. Memorial services were held Saturday, April 14, 2001, at the Unitarian Fellowship, 121 9th St. So. Fargo.
Vernette Aurdelle Holt was born November 14, 1929, to Albert and Grace (Ely) Holt of Superior, WI.
Vernette was raised and educated in Superior. She graduated from Superior East High school in 1947. She was the drum majorette for the Superior East High School Marching Band and was also a member of the Twirling Squad, Glee Club, and The Big Ten.
Vernette married her high school sweetheart, Robert "Bob" Nelson on July 21, 1950. They had two children together. Robert Thomas dob 7/25/52, and Laurie Ann dob 9/30/62.
Vernette was formerly employed at the Fargo Public Library. She retired in October of 2000. She had worked there thirty years. Vernette became a librarian after her husband's sudden death in 1969. She was loved by children throughout the Fargo Metro area.
Vernette was also a staunch democrat, a liberal, and a devoted defender of women's rights.
She was an advocate for her handicapped granddaughter, Ella.
Vernette dearly loved her children and was a devoted mother and friend.
She was cremated on April 12, 2001, the same day she died. Her ashes were interred in her husband's grave at Greenwood Cemetery on July 10, 2001 in a private family ceremony.
