Joanne Fitzgerald Blanks, 76, of Lynchburg, went to be with her Lord peacefully in her home. Married three times, she was preceded in death by her second husband, Melvin Walton Trent Sr., and third husband, Bernard Clyde Blanks. She is survived by her first husband, Andrew Roach Mann of Lynchburg.
Born in Tye River, (Nelson County) she was a daughter of the late Thornton Jacob Fitzgerald and Margaret Wright Fitzgerald Porter. Joanne was a seamstress for 17 years with Courtland Manufacturing. After giving birth to her last child, she provided day care in her home for children. This is when she became known to children as "granny Joanne." Most of all, Joanne had a love for God. All who knew her saw His glory shine through her. She praised God until her last hour. Psalm 119:105. She was a member of the First Assembly of God.
Two brothers and four sisters preceded her in death.
Survivors include her daughter, Doris Mann Wooldridge and her husband, Robert, of Concord; two sons, Andrew Thornton Mann and Melvin W. Trent Jr., both of Lynchburg; one sister, Virginia Neal-Newborn; three grandchildren, Kristin, Daniel and Cody; a special devoted niece, Patricia Harrison; six stepchildren; and many other extended family members.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17, 2008, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel, with the Rev. Gilbert L. Foster Sr. and the Rev. Ronnie Freeman officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.
A reception, hosted by the family, celebrating Joanne's life will be held at the First Assembly of God on Fort Avenue immediately following the graveside service.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, 2008, at Whitten Timberlake Chapel and other times at her residence.
The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to Dr. Oldham and his staff, the Gentle Shepherd Hospice and the special loving caregivers for the excellent care provided.
