Dr. Cullen Bonebrake, 89, St. Joseph, passed away Wednesday, July 14, 2010, at a local health care center.
Dr. Bonebrake was born on February 25, 1921, in Newell, Iowa, to Arthur and Laura (Grau) Bonebrake. Raised in Newell, his family then moved to Diagonal, Iowa, where he finished high school, and then graduated from University of Iowa.
During WW II, he served as a pilot in the Army Air Corp. Following his honorable discharge, he graduated from Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, Ill.
He married Helen V. Booker on June 2, 1947, in Mexia, Texas. To this union, four sons were born.
Following graduation, they moved to St. Joseph in 1947 and he began his lifelong, 50 year practice in optometry.
Dr. Bonebrake was a member of Christ Episcopal Church; Royal Order of Jesters, Moila, St. Joseph Country Club; American Optometric Association and Missouri Optometric Association.
Dr. Bonebrake was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Helen; two brothers, Dr. Arden Bonebrake and Rev. Boyd Bonebrake; and one son, Tom Bonebrake.
Survivors include three sons, Jim Bonebrake and wife, Donna, Plattsburg, Mo., Dr. Jack Bonebrake, St. Joseph, and Dr. Bob Bonebrake and wife, Katie, Omaha, Neb.; grandchildren, Jeff, Kate, Aex, Zane, Emma, Abby, Ben, Sam, Tom and Jack; great-grandchildren, Kaylie and Maeci; and two sisters, Jean Friesen, Upland, Ind., and Anne Lord and husband Jack, Dallas, Texas.
Burial Rite: 10:30 a.m. Friday at Christ Episcopal Church, under the direction of Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, St. Joseph. Inurnment to follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, St. Joseph. The family invites you to join them following the inurnment, for a reception at Christ Episcopal Church.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions to the Salvation Army.
