|Birth: ||Sep. 23, 1831|
|Death: ||Oct. 9, 1861|
James H. Beddo, my gg-grandfather, was born 23 September 1831 in Burke County, Georgia, the son of Sarah Ann Foreman (1805-1880) and a Mr. Beddo (whose first name currently unknown).
On May 12, 1854, James Beddo married my gg-grandmother, Mary Judson Whaley (1835-1884) in Sparta, Hancock County, Georgia and they had three children:
(1) Sarah Augusta "Gussie" Beddo Wheeler (1858-1925);
(2) Mary Moss "Mossie" Beddo (1859-1926;
(3) Clara Eugenia Beddo Cook (1859-1928) -my g-grandmother.
On May 11, 1861, James H. Beddo enlisted as a 2nd Sgt in Company D, Georgia 5th Infantry (Confederate) in Warren County, Georgia and was killed 5 months later on October 9, 1861 in the Battle of Santa Rosa Island, Florida, where the Confederates tried to take a Union-held fort: Fort Pickens. Although severely wounded, his fellow soldiers -- among whom was a Sgt. Henry H. Fitzpatrick, carried him for four miles -- without a litter or blanket -- so that he might die on their boat and not be bayonetted by the enemy in the bushes in his last hours. A transcription of Sgt. Fitzpatrick's letter to his relatives is attached to this memorial, as well as a picture of Sgt. Fitzpatrick - who I consider to be a true hero and great friend to my gg-grandfather.
The family legend has it that my gg-grandmother, immediately got on a train to retrieve the body of her husband -- but it had already been sent to Hancock County, Georgia for burial.
My father, James Cook was named after his g-grandfather, James H. Beddo, and both he and James Beddo's grandson, Sidney Herbert Cook--my grandfather--exhibited the same honorable virtues of James H. Beddo, who was taken away from us too soon.
