Bernice Irene Bashans
Bernice Irene Bashans age 81 of Westbrook passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 5, 2009 at the Westbrook Good Samaritan Care Center.
Funeral services were held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Westbrook.
Interment is in the Rosehill Mennonite Cemetery.
Bernice "Berny" Irene Bashans was born October 22, 1927 at home in Rosehill Township, Cottonwood County, MN to Harry and Elizabeth (Janda) Bashans. She was baptized & confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Westbrook where she has been a lifelong faithful member. Church was an important part of Bernice's life. She served on various committees and was active in Bible study, Ladies Aid & the church choir. Bernice attended various country schools in Cottonwood County. From a young age, music, especially country western, was an important part of her life. She could play guitar or piano and sing for hours. She never turned down a request to share her musical talents at church, bridal showers or community events. Bernice was also a member of the Westbrook Hospital Auxiliary. She loved all things "Western". She and her friend Margaret Olson took many vacations to dude ranches where they spent their days riding horses. Bernice was a member and officer of the Westbrook Saddle Club. She enjoyed riding her two horses. Her love of dogs was apparent to anyone who met her. She had many special dogs as a part of her life, and had a large collection of dog and horse figurines. She also collected salt and pepper shakers. Over the years, she had many pen pals who helped her add to these collections. Bernice loved the simple things in life. She enjoyed playing Bingo or any game that one might have. She also enjoyed playing jokes on people, and sometimes her sense of humor could be taken the wrong way and got her in trouble. She will be remembered for working as clerk at different businesses in Westbrook, most of all she worked for 40 years at Lichty Drug until her retirement in 2008. Bernice was very giving, and never forgot a birthday, confirmation, graduation, bridal shower, anniversary, wedding or other special occasion for family and friends. She visited the graves and left flowers for every relative each Memorial Day while she was able. Bernice entered the Westbrook Good Samaritan Home in May 2009 where she resided until she passed away.
She leaves to mourn three godchildren: Mary Rupp Larson, Rodney Brandt & Betty Cooley Johnson; aunt Marie Warwick; cousins: Donna Schoenenberger, Alma Rupp, Sheila Hegg, Ila Travis, Wayne Baumgard, Curtis Bashans, Mary Hagemeyer & Barbara Ohleman; dear friend Wanda Brandt; and many second cousins and special friends. Preceding her in death are her parents Harry & Elizabeth Bashans.
