Samuel was the son of Dexter and Leafy (Fitts) Alden. He married Diana Mitchell on 7 December 1845 in Thompson, Connecticut. One son, Edwin, was born to this marriage which ended in divorce. Samuel married Mary Adeline Baker on 10 May 1858 in Worcester, Massachusetts. One son, Everard, was born to them.
Samuel enlisted in Company G, 51st Massachusetts Infantry on 30 September 1862. He was mustered out on 27 July 1863 at Worcester, Massachusetts.
Samuel and Mary relocated to Saint Charles, Illinois, where Mary's daughter by a previous marriage and her husband resided. They then removed to Faulk County, South Dakota.
Samuel spent some time in the Veterans' Home in Minneapolis, and then transferred to the Home in West Allis, Wisconsin, where he died. His son Edwin was a resident of the home at the same time. Both are buried in the cemetery there.
