Edward Merckx, 92, of Huntington, IN, died Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010, at 3:09 p.m. at Parkview Huntington Hospital.
Mr. Merkcx was a funeral director and owner of Merckx Funeral Home in Huntington from 1956 to 1978. H purchased the funeral home from Harley Briggs in 1956 and sold it to Morris Hart in 1978. It is currently known as the McElhaney-Hart Funeral Home.
Mr. Merckx served as Huntington County coroner from 1973 to 1980. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Huntington, and a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post 160 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2689. He was a past president of the Huntington County Chamber of Commerce, a former member of the Kiwanis Club and a past chairman of the Huntington County Red Cross.
He was a veteran of the United States Army. After being drafted in 1941, he attended Officers Training School and served in European Theater operations in Normandy, northern France and Rhineland. He was wounded three times and was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
He was born Aug. 2, 1918, in Union Township to Peter J. and Rosalie Faes Merckx. He married Rebecca J. Platt on Sept. 14, 1942, in Roanoke. His wife survives.
Calling is Sunday, Sept. 19, 2010, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., with recitation of the Rosary at 6 p.m., at McElhaney-Hart Funeral Home, 715 N. Jefferson St., Huntington. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, Sept. 20 2010, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, 903 N. Jefferson St., Huntington, with Rev. John Pfister officiating. Burial will be at Hoverstock Cemetery, Zanesville.
