She was the fourth of five children born to W.H. Ramsey and Mary Susan Gann Ramsey. She had one brother that lived to adulthood. William Essie Ramsey was born December 20, 1907 and died November 13, 1937. Jennie lived life with a passion. She put God first and her family followed. Jennie never stopped learning. She received her teaching diploma from Eastern Kentucky University, and her Masters from Columbia University. She also spent one year at Stanford University, California on a Fellowship and spent some time at the Florida State College for Women. She taught English at Benham High School, Kentucky, starting in 1927 while still a student at Eastern Kentucky and continuing until 1945. While at Benham she was selected as a member of the "Southern Study", A cooperation among 33 Southern High schools to develop methods to better serve the students that ran from 1937 to 1940 and in 1943 she received the fellowship to participate in a study of social studies at Stanford. She also coached the boy's basketball team during some of the war years and many of the young boys would write letters to her from the front during World War II. Jennie also had a life time membership in the PI Lambda Theta. Jennie left Benham to accept a position at the Alabama Women's College in Montevallo, Alabama. At some point in the late '40's, Jennie accepted a position with the American Junior Red Cross and given an office in Orlando, Florida. It was in this position that she made many trips throughout the South, driving herself and keeping detailed mileage logs. She received the 1954 hi hat Achievement Club Award for service in the Louisiana-Mississippi area. Jennie has many more awards that she earned through her life for her constant helping hand and loving heart. She has traveled through many different states, parts of Mexico and Europe. Jennie married J.F. Baker in 1960. She was 59 years old! She and Frank operated a dairy farm and were members of the First Baptist Church in Montevallo, Alabama. They were much involved with the Church where Jennie was a Sunday School teacher and part time knitting instructor to those who wished to learn. Jennie touched every soul she ever met. She will be remembered for a very long time.
