Obituary:
CHARLES JOHNSON Charles William Johnson, 80, passed away at home surrounded by his loving family Tuesday July 19, 2011, in Las Vegas, after a courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis. Charles was born June 4, 1931, in Provo, Utah, to Valdemar E. and Belva Gurney Johnson. His family lived in Cedar City, Utah, and later moved to Lehi, Utah where he graduated from high school in 1949. He attended Brigham Young University for one year prior to serving a mission in East Germany for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He went on to graduate from BYU in 1955. It was there that he met the love of his life Eleanor Law from Santa Barbara, Calif. They were married on May 11, 1955, in the Salt Lake Temple. After running a successful insurance practice for several years, Charles moved his small family to Washington D.C., to attend George Washington University Law School where he graduated with a Juris Doctorate degree in 1963. He settled the family in Las Vegas, that same year and began a successful law practice specializing in the area of trusts and estates. During his career, he was selected to the prestigious American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, served as president of the Southern Nevada Estate Planning Council, chairman of the Nevada Law Foundation, and received "Peacemaker of the Year Award" from Mediators of Southern Nevada in 2008. He served in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as a bishop, stake president, high councilor, spokesman for the Las Vegas Temple, teacher, served a mission with his wife to Germany and the Family History Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, and counselor in the Las Vegas Temple Presidency. Charles was endlessly dedicated to his family, church and his community. Beyond any other accomplishment, Charles considered his family his greatest joy and treasure. His happiest moments were when he was surrounded by his family. He was an exceptional father who lovingly taught his children by word and deed. Charles is survived by his loving wife, Eleanor (Ellie) Johnson; and eight children, Ted V. Johnson (Debbie), Ruth Johnson Mummey (Blair), David C. Johnson (Kathy), Jean Johnson Clark (Cray), Robert E. Johnson (Judith), Stephen L. Johnson (Kim), Paul G. Johnson (Charlene) and Mark A. Johnson (Amy); 32 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Howard W. Johnson, who died as an infant. A viewing will be 6-8 p.m. Sunday, July 24, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 7401 Smoke Ranch Road, Las Vegas. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, July 25th at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 10550 Alta Drive, Las Vegas. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in memoriam be made to LDS Philanthropies/mission fund at 801-240-5567 or online at ldsphilanthropies.org
