Gen José Gervasio Artigas
Birth: Jun. 19, 1764
Death: Sep. 23, 1850

Military man and statesman. Born in Montevideo, Uruguay and died in Ibiray, Paraguay. Considered the maximum Uruguayan hero as well as the first Leader of the Orientals (Uruguayans). He is revered for his outstanding performance in the independence war and for his democratic and pro-American ideas. He fought against the Spanish, for which his knowledge of the land north of the Rio Negro and south of the then Portuguese territory, and that of the charruas (indians in that zone) was a valuable advantage. Later he successively fought against the Unitarian regime installed in Buenos Aires city, the Empire of Portugal and the Empire of Brazil, driving his homeland towards the independence, though in an indirect way, as this has been achieved being him already self-exiled in Paraguay, where he died in 1850. His remains were repatriated in 1855 and deposited in the "Cementerio Central" (Montevideo's Central Cemetery) but in 1977 they were moved to a mausoleum in the Plaza Independencia. (bio by: Nes Pagani)
