Charles E. Slaven Jr. (Charlie), passed away on Wednesday, June 7, 2006 at Wuesthoff ICU; with him were his wife, Betty; granddaughter, Haley; son, Charles; and daughter in law, Brenda. He was born in Ashtabula, Ohio on December 12, 1921, and later moved to Youngstown, Ohio. Charlie served in the United States Marine Corps in World War II and Korea, and support ed the USMC all his life. He moved with his wife and two children from Ohio to Miami, Florida in the early 1950s, where he worked at Hoover Aircraft Products and designed, fabricated, and installed the first White Rooms at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. He later worked for many years at KSC and was awarded the Silver Snoopy by Fred Haise of the Astronaut Corps after the 1970 Apollo 13, AS- 508 launch for his outstanding professionalism. He had a bach elors degree from FTU (UCF) and was a Certified Professional Manager. He was very patriotic and loved his country deeply. He sup ported it through active participa tion in the American Legion Post 22, VFW, 40/8; and BPOE-Elks Lodge 2650. He was also active in the Masonic Lodge 353 MI, and the Azan Shrine Temple in Melbourne. He contributed to many, many other charitable causes and service organiza tions with both his money and time. He is survived by his wife, Betty Lou Rathweg Slaven; son, Charles (Brenda) Slaven III; step-son, Fred Rathweg; step-daughter, Lynn (Keith) Adolphson; grandchildren, Randy and Alissa Slaven, Ginger (Ben), Gabriel, Crystal, Kenny, Haley, and Nathan Rathweg, and Layla (David Anson, Candace (Caylon) Haggard; great-granddaugh ter Astrid Anson. He is also survived by his ex-wife, Ruth Lloyd Slaven, and the Kelly Families from Washington DC. He was preceeded in death by son, Russell Slaven, and step-son, Joe Rathweg. We will all miss him very much and appreciate your continued prayers. Services will be held at Brevard Memorial Funeral Home in Cocoa on Saturday, June 10th, at 2 p.m., with a viewing held one hour prior.
