16th Mayor of Bayonne

Lucius Francis Donohue, son of John and Bridget Donohue, was born in Bayonne, New Jersey. He graduated from the NYU Medical College and in 1894 joined the staff of Bayonne Hospital. In 1900, Donohue married Frances W. Appleby. During World War I, Donohue was a colonel in the U.S. Army's Medical Corp and was awarded the Chevalier of the Legion of Honor by the French government. During the war, his wife Frances was a volunteer worker and died in London in 1918. After the war, he returned to his medical practice and helped Bayonne Hospital grow. Donohue, a Democrat, also took up politics. In 1931, he overturned the 'Boss' Hague Machine controlled government and won the election for mayor of Bayonne and served for eight years. He died in his home and his funeral was at St. Mary's R.C. Church in Bayonne. It was said of Donohue, "Bayonne Hospital is his monument."
