Civil War Veteran

Baughan was born in Ireland. After the Confederates attacked Fort Sumter to start the Civil War, Baughan enlisted on April 26, 1861 as a private. On May 1, he joined Company C of the 2nd New Jersey Militia, commanded by Col. Henry M. Baker, for three months service. Baughan was promoted to sergeant. The regiment was stationed in Alexandria, Virginia in the defense of Washington D.C. until it's term of service was up. The 2nd Regiment returned to New Jersey where they were mustered out of service in Newark on July 31, 1861.

He then served in Company F, 1st New York Volunteer Cavalry, rising to Sergeant.

After the war, Baughan lived on Henderson Street in Jersey City.
