British Army Field Marshal. Following his victory at the Battle of Omdurman in 1898, he crushed the Sudanese dervishes and avenged the death of General Gordon and established British control in the Sudan. In the early stages of the South African war he assisted Lord Roberts and took over command himself in 1900. He helped moderate the terms of Boer surrender in 1902. Kitchener served as Commander in Chief of India (1902-09)and Secretary of War (1914-16). Kitchener drowned whilst on his way to Russia in 1916. His cruiser HMS Hampshire is believed to have struck a mine in bad weather,and his body was never recovered. (bio by: Kieran Smith)
