Born in Seattle, WA, in 1899, she was the second daughter and youngest child of Ivy Symonds and Samuel Truman Kelsey, Jr. From her father's side, she was descended from a number of early American immigrants, including Swiss, English, French, and Welsh ancestors, some of whom arrived as early as 1629. From her mother's side she had a Canadian/English heritage.
She was the mother of three children: two daughters, and a son who preceded her in death by many years.
She loved plants and flowers of all kinds and she loved the California coast, living in San Francisco, San Diego, and Santa Barbara in her later years. She had 12 grandchildren, two of whom tragically preceded her in death.
