These are two small grave markers that the base of an ancient tree has grown around.
The story I heard was that, when the City of Gloucester cut down and removed several old dead trees from Union Cemetery on Powell Street a few years ago, it was decided that this one particular tree should be left alone because they did not wish to disturb these children's graves.
One is a regular small, plain stone that reads "Della M. Pea" before it goes into the tree. I think it may be "Pearce" or "Pearson." There is date on it of October 18, 1901. I don't know if that is the date of birth or date of death.
The other is a homemade marker of wood and mosaic tile that says simply "BABY IBEALE." That was as deep as I could dig down.
I believe that these two burials both date from the early years of the last century.
