Melanie Ann Hart died peacefully at home September 15, 2010, surrounded by her family. She was 60 years old. Melanie was born in Detroit, Michigan, to parents Genevieve (nee Zajac) and Francis Kales.

Melanie attended Dominican High School in Detroit, and went on to graduate Magna Cum Laude from Marygrove College in 1972. She then received her Master's in Education from Saginaw Valley University. After her graduate studies, she began teaching English in the Fraser School System, where she remained for 30 years until her retirement in 2003. Even in retirement, Melanie served as a substitute teacher at Marian High School in Bloomfield Hills.

Melanie was an extremely well-read woman who belonged to several book clubs. She enjoyed literature of all kinds, music and theatre, and remained a patron of the arts throughout her life. She loved traveling, especially to Ireland, and visiting her daughter in New York City. She and her girlfriends frequently attended the Stratford theatre festivals as well. One of her favorite activities was watching hockey and she was a passionate Red Wings fan.

Melanie was a tremendously cultured and intelligent woman with an abundance of personal gifts; however, she considered her greatest reward in life to be the love she shared with family and friends. A devoted and adoring wife, mother, sister, and aunt, Melanie will be remembered best for her ever-present humor, fortitude, and grace. She was deeply loved and will be sorely missed.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Leon, her children Michael and Kathleen, and her brother, Eugene Kales. She is preceded in death by her brother, John Kales, and her parents, Frank and Genevieve Kales.

Memorials appreciated to the American Cancer Society, 20450 Civic Center Drive, Southfield, Michigan 48076.
