Kathryn Winstead founded Winstead's Drive In with the help of her sister Nelle and her husband Gordon Montgomery. It opened in Springfield, Illinois. About 1940, a store was opened at 101 Brush Creek Blvd. in Kansas City, Missouri, which is still in operation today, under new ownership. After Kathryn's death, the store was sold, and the new owners opened several other locations throughout the metro Kansas City area. Still serving the same steakburgers, malts, etc., Winstead's is quite famous for their food. Kathryn is buried beside her sister Nelle and her husband Gordon Montgomery.
