Major William Deane Moody, USMC, of West Los Angeles California, who was decorated for heroism on the island of Peleliu during World War II while with the 1st Marine Division died at the U.S. Naval Hospital at Camp Pendleton of injuries received when his Jeep in which he was riding to maneuvers overturned. The accident occurred on winding Basilone Road within the confines of Camp Pendleton, where the major was based. At the time of his accident, he had been notified of his return to inactive duty, and was carrying his discharge papers with him. He was the son-in-law of Hiram J. Hamer, Southern California architect and co-founder and developer of Bel Air, CA.
