Maurice Dale Kubena, of Houston, Texas, died on February 23, 2013, after an extended stay at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital in Sugar Land, Texas.
Born July 7, 1935, in Robstown, Texas to Joe and Viola (Hercek) Kubena, Maurice lived all of his life in Texas with most of his adult years spent enjoying the art, diversity, restaurants, nature, culture, and people unique to Austin. Maurice was known as "Buddy" to his family and many friends. However some of his contemporaries simply called him "Moe."
Maurice placed a high value on education and was always reading and studying to improve himself. He graduated from Robstown High School in 1954 where he was a letterman in tennis, basketball, and baseball. After high school, he attended Texas Lutheran College in Seguin where he was on the tennis team and a member of the theater group throughout his undergraduate years.
Maurice graduated from TLC in 1958 with a bachelor's degree in speech and secondary education. Some years later, he continued his education at the University of Texas at Austin where, in 1968, he completed his master's degree in speech pathology. Over the course of his lifetime, Maurice progressed through several careers as an educator, therapist, and administrator.
Maurice began his professional life as a teacher and tennis coach at Brownsville High School in Brownsville before moving to Austin where he worked in the Del Valle school system while completing graduate school at UT. After completing his master's degree, Maurice began working as a speech therapist in private practice and then with The Brown Schools, an organization that cared for mentally and physically challenged youths. This association continued into the 1980s when he took on a variety of positions in staff development and psychiatric hospital administration with Healthcare International.
Maurice eventually left private healthcare to continue staff and quality development with the State of Texas at what is now known as the Texas Department of State Health Services. In this capacity, he was in charge of educating staff members on safety and total quality management. During his tenure with the state, Maurice also served on boards that evaluated business quality systems across Texas and the nation. Upon his retirement from the state, Maurice ventured back into his original occupation when he took a position as a speech therapist with the Elgin Independent School District.
Maurice met his wife, the former Linda Sue Black, at Texas Lutheran College where they were married on December 28, 1958 at the campus chapel. The two of them were very happy together for forty-four years until her passing in April 2003.
They thoroughly enjoyed raising their two sons, Brian and Bruce, and they loved them and their wives dearly. Maurice and Linda enjoyed all of the fun times they experienced with their five granddaughters; they both truly loved being grandparents.
Maurice's hobbies included his love of gardening (pulling weeds), landscaping (busting rocks/boulders), and the sporting life (attending UT basketball games and competing in tennis league play at Caswell). Surviving members of Maurice's family all live in Texas.
In addition to his and Linda's immediate family members still living, other survivors include his many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and many other dear friends and neighbors. Family memorial services will be held over the next several weeks in Rockport-Fulton and Houston, Texas.
Maurice was cremated and his ashes, combined eternally with those of Linda, will be distributed at various locations across Texas.
