In 1932 Howard and Maime 'Pearl' opened their hearts and their home in Charleston, Mississippi, to rear Luther 'Warren' 'Sonny' Lawson after his mother died when Sonny was only 3. Warren was the son of
Wilbur (Epps) (1910-1932) and
Luther Curtis Lawson, who was the son of
Rosa Lee (Sheley) Lawson, the sister of
Three must be the most difficult age for anyone to suffer the death of his mother, not being able to understand what had happened or why his mother does not come when he calls out to her; it must have been a real challenge to take in a toddler under that situation.
Howard and Pearl reared Sonny until he was 12 or 13, when he went to St Louis where his father was living and later went to work in the family business, Lawson Bros Flooring Co.
Their daughter, Eloise taught grade school and lived with her parents for much of her adult life, before she married later in her life.
