Sonny's mother died when he was only 4, leaving his 21-yr old, widower father with 4 children under the age of 5.
Sonny was reared by his great aunt Pearl Sheley Lavender and Howard C Lavender and their older daughter, Eloise Lavender, who was a school teacher.
The family story is that when only 12 years old, he ran away from home and managed to get himself from the state of Mississippi all the way to St Louis where his father, 2 sisters, and step mother were living. Once there, his father's family had no space for him, and he wound up living his teen years with his name-sake, his uncle Robert and aunt Lucy Lawson.
Sonny's first marriage was a double ceremony where he married Barbara (GARDNER), and
Sonny's sister, (living as of Feb 2014), married
Barbara's brother, William Charles Gardner Jr (1928-2012)
After Sonny and Barbara were divorced, in abt 1959 he married Violet (nee Taylor), [formerly Mrs. George Anderson], a widow. His marriage to Violet also ended in divorce, in abt 1969. Curtis, (son of Violet and Sonny) died at barely 50 years old.
His third marriage (in the early 1970's) was to Dulsa 'Dell' Lawson, (Sept 11, 1929 - Aug 10, 1990).
Sonny and his first wife, Barbara (GARDNER), (1927-2010), had 3 children (not listed here; all living as of Feb 2014).
He had one child, Curtis (1961-2011) by his second wife, Violet (1933-2010).
He did not have any children with Dulsa.
