In 1900, Claude was 17 and going by the name of Moses Burris. He was captured in that year's census twice. Once at his parents' home and also at his employer's farm, both in Madison, KS. He is listed as the 'servant' of C.R. Day and employed as a farm laborer.
The 1910 US Census records Claude M. Burris living with his brother Marion Isaac Burris in Madison Township of Greenwood County, KS. Their mother and father both died two years earlier in 1908. Claude was 27 and working as a teamster for the city of Madison, KS.
Claude M. Burris married his wife Etta (Julia Etta Britt) at the age of 29 in 1912. She was 21 years of age. Their first child was a daughter born in July of 1913 who died after only 17 days of life.
In 1918, Claude "Mose" Burris registered for the draft of the first world war. He was residing with his wife Etta in Madison, KS. He listed his occupation as "teaming" and his employer as Carter Oil Company in Eldorado, KS.
In the US Census of 1920 (taken on January 15), Claude M. Burris was married to Etta J. Burris. He was 37 and she was 29. They had three children living with them at that time. The eldest, a daughter named Marie, age 5. A son, age 2 named Harold, and a three month-old infant named Frank Cleon Burris. Claude worked as a Teamster for the City of Madison, KS.
In 1930, Claude M.(age 47) and Etta J. Burris(age 40) were still living at Madison, KS. He was born in KS, she in IL. He listed his occupation as 'Farmer'. Their children were: Marie F. (age 15), R. Harold (age 12), Frank (age 10), J. Elton (age 6). All of the children were born in KS.
In 1940, Claude and his family were living at Low Gap, Arkansas in Newton County. He was 57 and Etta was 50 that year. Three of their children were living with them: Marie (age 25), Frank (age 21), and Jack (age 16). It was recorded that all of them lived in Madison, Greenwood County, KS in 1935. Claude was employed as a Farm Operator, and his sons as farm laborers.
Claude died six years later in 1946 and was buried at Line Cemetery in Lyon County, KS. His wife Julia Etta (Britt) Burris was laid to rest next to him there in 1967.
